Lately I've been working with high-key and low-key lighting in the classroom, teaching my students how to use off-camera lights creatively. The idea is to use lighting to create mood and show texture and shape of people and things. This particular post is an example of low-key lighting, which was taught to my students recently.

Yesterday, I got out my flash again and found some suitable background material and decided to try some shots on our youngest. It seems that studio portraiture can sometimes be snubbed by some because of the traditional formal presentation that it brings. I find it to be fun when you can bring true interaction and natural emotions to the shoot. This series was just an experiment in lighting, but ended with several photos of which I'm happy with despite the traditional lighting setup.

I purchased a simple lighting kit recently to be able to add to the portfolio of work that my business does. This evening I took a shot of my two little girls, which came out surprisingly well, considering the spontaneous nature surrounding the shoot.
